We weren't really planning on taking another foster dog when my 5 year old son, Ben, and I agreed to go pick up a dog from Town Lake Animal Center for
Austin Aussie Rescue two weeks ago. They were busy when we arrived, and Ben had to go to the bathroom, so we decided to walk around and visit the animals out in the pens for awhile before picking the AAR dog up. While we were walking around saying "hi" and " chin up!" to all the dogs, we saw a sweet, beautiful dog that I fell in love with. I quickly jotted down her pen number so that I could talk to the
Forgotten Friends- Mixed Breed Rescue director about her later. Then we went to the office to get the dog we were suppose to pick up. They looked her up in the computer and called for someone to bring the dog in pen #147 into the office-- the same pen number I had written down! And in walked Layla. We really wanted to foster her, so Joann, the director of Austin Aussie Rescue, got permission from TLAC for us to foster Layla, and here she is!!
Layla settled in easily to this busy foster home full of other dogs, cats, and people. She gets along with kids and adults, old and young dogs, and- surprisingly-- even cats. She was in kind of rough shape when she first arrived, very skinny and lots of angry-looking flea bites. Not unexpectedly after coming out of a shelter, she developed a cough and possible upper respiratory infection within a few days of arriving here. We took her to see our rescue vet,
Compassion Animal Hospital, and they gave her an exam and started her on some antibiotics for the cough and to prevent a skin infection. We began giving her 3V Caps as well and started her on a diet of
Nature's Variety Prairie. She looks much better now.
Layla occasionally has a minor scuffle with one of the other bigger girls here, but she is very gentle with the little pups. Most of the time they all play very well together. She got her staples out on Thursday and is almost over her upper respiratory infection, so we will be getting more serious on her training. Right now, we are mostly working on house manners such as house breaking and crate training, both of which she is doing very well with. For basic obedience, she knows "sit" and walks fairly well on the lead. We will keep you updated!!
